Historical Gaslighting: God's "Wife," Mary's non-virginity, and David's Gay Lover

Today Matt and I spend the bulk of our time discussing Dairmaid MacCulloch’s book, Lower than the Angels; A History of Sex and Christianity, which turns out not to be actual history but “history" read through the lens of radical leftist New Testament scholarship with little to no engagement with anything else. Did you know, for example, that the birth narratives in Matthew and Luke were made up and that Mary wasn’t virgin but instead got pregnant because she was sexually assaulted and that David and Jonathan were totally gay and that Abraham was made up by some Jewish people in the late second Temple era and that God really had a goddess wife named Asherah until misogynist Jewish men edited her out of the family and that all the miracles in the New Testament are really propaganda and didn’t happen? Well, Dairmaid MacCulloch is here to set you straight (or rather, not straight) so that you Christians can stop being bigots and affirm the lgbtq+ movement. Also, we mention the Bishop Ruch trial, my piece this morning for World on the steep decline of the CofE, and our impending camping trip. Enjoy!
