“I therefore had a policy that books and programs I didn’t personally enjoy were not forbidden, but I would not be persuaded to read those things aloud or watch them.”
Yes. I didn’t consciously make this policy, but it’s firmly established in our home. Watch Nightmare Before Christmas with you? No— I saw it in 1994 and hated it then. Read Animal Farm or A Christmas Carol to you? Sure! Read any sort of graphic novel? Hard pass.
Thank you for sharing! I feel so encouraged, as this is pretty much exactly what we've been doing with our kids. The oldest is only 16, but so far it's so good. Another thing we are trying to convince our children of is that no one should think they have a right to privacy with what they do on devices - everyone, adults included, should always be willing to share their screen with someone else. It's not like you have to always be able to show the 7 year old sibling, just someone else in the family, or a trusted friend.
Absolutely loved this piece even though I just got to it. And, I definitely feel like the weirdo who doesn’t Life360 her kids (and spouse). I do wonder how much parental control monitoring on phones, apps, texts is too much? Where is the line between safeguarding and being nosy.
Technology is such a hard thing to navigate as a parent. As a former teacher and as a parent, I've been both shocked and dismayed at how many young people are lured into pornography through phones, ipods, etc. Often it starts early - age 9-11 isn't uncommon. They also get lured into it through online group video games. Not allowing phones until driving-age is a worthy ideal.
Thank you for sharing everything here. I admit to being curious as to what they are all doing now they’re entering adulthood. This is an instance of regret that I am not a digital platform joiner. With regard to technology this comment is a bit off-topic. Will any be doing graphic novels? Or say an Anne Kennedy book cover? 📖 Do they still read? Are they interested in writing long form?
This post is both practical . . . and hilarious. :)
Yay for making adults, not just older, immature children!

I laughed so hard over Fake Bible Quotes my dog was unnerved. "If I do not choose the unworthy, how will they become worthy?" I'm dying...
