Growing up in a small town in the rural South, in the summer I would go with my friends from one vacation bible school to the next. Methodist one week, Baptist the next, Church of Christ, and Presbyterian, too.
We were not concerned about the doctrines of each denomination, just hanging out with our friends and having a good time. In the afternoons we would ride our bicycles to the public swimming pool and do "cannon balls" off the diving board and have raspberry sno-cones when we got thirsty.
Thanks, Anne. Your writing includes the only exposure to the NYT that I receive. It’s not a rag that I desire to subscribe to, but I always look forward to your posts and the things that you critique in it. I sincerely hope you can restore the situation in your basement.
And I get it. Our kids are older now, but when they were young, I tried various camps. Soccer, mixed sports; art and science. Things they seemed interested in and our community offered a lot, and we usually did 1 hour to half day, part of the time. (there’s even sewing, now!)
When our oldest was two or more (very young), I signed him up for basketball camp. I was highly naive. Dropped him off and 6 foot plus guys took him into the gym. I saw few toddlers. It was super hot out and inside. When I picked him up and asked how it was, he said, “Fine, but I didn’t know where the bathrooms were.” Oh no. I told my husband “GOD has much more to give us than this”, and did not take him back, called to say why.
Most other experiences had +/-s but overall gave me a break, which I needed, (no family close by) and them some stimulation.
Around Jr. High, they began to want to skip these, complained of driving vacations, til we reminded them their friend was probably sitting home doing the same old video games. He met us for part of a vacation thé next year.
I began to wish when my oldest was in High School he could play outside and ride bikes outside as I did. Have old friends like ours!
Later I realized GOD answered this prayer way beyond I could ask or think. They did get in trouble for air soft in the park; and had to stop that, and archery into a neighbors yard, had to stop that, and finally a dangerous form of biking, (but survived and thrived)!
My point is, did I pray sooner?
I think so, but GOD cares, and even if the “perfect” in our minds does not work out, GOD is perfect, He knows and cares!

Oh no, did you actually pay good money to read a New York Times article?
NYT = Never Yukky Truth

And VBS was fun. So was Christian family camp, when the kids were young.
Dear friends,
lol.

Have a blessed summer!
Do a lot of school districts still do year-long school?
Don’t get me started on that abomination.
