I am supposed to be writing about Peter Enns as my next project for the Christian Research Journal. I have been chipping away at his content for a while, in a desultory way, over the last six weeks, but it suddenly came upon me that I needed to get serious. So yesterday, while I took everything out of all my kitchen drawers, and scrubbed them, and threw away a lot of junk, I listened to Curveball and How the Bible Actually Works at 2 times the regular speed. Both of these theological efforts seem to be recapitulations of his earlier Inspiration and Incarnation which, I believe, is what got him in trouble with Westminster.
The main thing to observe, which may come as a surprise to you, is that Peter Enns really loves baseball. In fact, his first crisis of faith came when he wasn’t able to play professionally, with various other crises following along as the decades went by. I feel for him. I never wanted to play baseball for any reason so I can’t really understand, but it is grievous to have something you most particular desire denied to you and know, in your depths, that it’s God’s fault.
