Oh well, I thought I had gotten all the Satan stuff out of the way yesterday, but then I discovered this fresh hell. It’s a sermon called “What If God Worships Me?” delivered by someone named Jermell Witherspoon at a place called Common Good Church in Bellevue Washington. Here is just a little taste, if you aren’t keen to watch the whole thing:
And here is Mike Winger’s patient takedown of the whole awful mess.
I imagine the purpose of this “sermon,” on the surface, is to generate clicks and sighs of shock and awe, and here I am, on cue, registering my disapprobation. But verily verily, I feel like it’s totally legit to point out that this poor man, under the guise of eliciting worship for himself from God, is in fact worshipping Satan.
You might remember that time when Lucifer, the most beautiful of all the angels, tried to overthrow God and was therefore flung out of heaven, and then how he beguilingly appeared in the new bright world that God had made to deceive the woman, Eve, who listened to him, thought about it all for three or four seconds, and then “owned her wanting” or whatever and rebelled against her Creator. And then Adam who was hanging around, too bored to do anything, listened to her and also ate the fruit, and how ever since we’ve been living in the low, slow simmer of clown world. A lot of people, lately, are attempting to cast this first sin as a good thing, and God as the baddie. But in this they are mistaken. You can tell because every version they come up with is more pathetic and fatuous than the last.
No, the way the Bible tells it is still the truth. Adam and Eve chose themselves over God. It was their spiritual act of worship to do the one thing the Lord commanded them not to do. As a result, God had to go into the very pit to rescue his creatures. It was a whole big thing, just to quote my children. Satan is, and always has been, the bad guy. I expect those of you who regularly read this blog already know that, but I thought I’d just make sure we are all up to speed.
So anyway, here are just a few of the lines of the “sermon” that are worthy of all men to be rejected.
God worships me. Can you say that with me? What if God worships me?
