I’m so sorry, I did no correspondence yesterday—NONE. I meant to, but instead, I drove around looking for Matt and then, when I found him, went to the grand festival Eucharist. The music was amazing, so I can only conclude that neglecting my most basic obligations was entirely the right thing to do. Today I’m driving into Pittsburgh to spend a glorious afternoon with John and Kathy of The Ride Home with John and Kathy.
To celebrate, this will be a post of tweets. The question is, is it possible for a “conservative” denomination to drift to the left? Or, is even saying such a thing on the interwebs a logical fallacy? Let us begin. Here is the tweet that launched a few other tweets:
I think the whole thing hinges on the word “quite.” Or, as Constance, sister of the Earl of Emsworth would say it, “Queaatee.” What does it mean to be “quite” conservative? Honestly, I don’t think anyone knows. It could be a touch conservative. It could be a mere pinch. It could be the “quite” of the full measure, pressed down, shaken together. What does “quite” mean to you?
Perhaps it might be the quite that thinks no-fault divorce is a net good and children should be allowed to choose gender-affirming care for themselves. Or perhaps it is the “quite” of thinking that a Pride parade is a suitable outing for a priest in God’s holy church because love is love. Or, you know, it could mean the “quite” of accepting the biological realities of women and caring about how the Bible is read and preached—like, on its (the Bible’s) terms rather than those of what The Episcopal Church likes best today. Who's to say?
Anyway, somehow the thread was taken up elsewhere:
Good News Everyone! “The Left” is a strawman fallacy! It doesn’t exist in “conservative” denominations. If you think you’ve seen something on the “left” you’re wrong. It isn’t there. Sure, there was The Table, and Rez Austin, and now Luminous, and a variety of interesting initiatives within the ACNA that strangely resemble what is most comfortable for many progressives today, but who are you going to believe? Surely not your lying eyes.
